Manual Extract: Differential Bearing Preload Determination
The process of determining differential bearing preload involves several crucial steps:
- Align the reference marks and mount the bearing support caps.
- Secure the support caps with retention screws and tighten them to the specified torque.
- Hand-tighten the adjustment ring nuts until the bearings have no play.
- Verify that the clearance between the crown wheel and pinion complies with specified values, which can be found engraved on the crown wheel.
- If necessary, adjust the clearance using the ring nuts.
- With the appropriate tool, confirm that the rolling torque for the crown wheel and pinion bearings is within the prescribed range of 5.0 to 5.5 Nm (3.687-4.056 lb ft), including pinion and transmission effects.
- To adjust the rolling torque, turn the adjustment ring nuts by the same number of notches:
- Unscrew the ring nuts to decrease the torque.
- Screw on the ring nuts to increase the torque.
Following these instructions will ensure proper functioning and longevity of the vehicle’s differential system.
