The starting circuit is a critical component of vehicle function, comprising several key elements: the starter, starter solenoid, key switch, neutral start switch, battery, and associated wiring and cables.
Here’s how it operates:
- When the key switch is turned to the Start position, and the transmission is in Neutral, the neutral start switch closes, energizing the starter solenoid.
- The solenoid plunger retracts, sliding the starter pinion for engagement with the flywheel ring gear.
- Upon reaching the end of the plunger’s travel, the solenoid contacts close, allowing current to flow to the armature and field windings, prompting the starter to crank the engine.
- To prevent the engine from driving the starter after engine ignition, the starter incorporates a one-way roller clutch. This allows the armature to drive the pinion while disengaging when the pinion attempts to drive the armature.
- Releasing the key switch breaks the solenoid circuit. A spring in the solenoid then returns the plunger to its original position, disengaging the pinion from the flywheel.
